35 Things to Do Instead of Facebook

September 19, 2016 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

Let’s be honest.

For most of us, there’s a lot to like about Facebook.

I like reading my friends’ status updates and looking at their pictures.

I like seeing funny or inspirational memes.

I like being encouraged through articles and Scriptures posted by others.

I like stumbling across a recipe or quick tip that’s helpful in my life.

I like finding Christian Facebook pages that fill my newsfeed and nurture my walk with the Lord.

As a writer, I like sharing inspiration and building a community for my blog readers.

As much as there is to like about Facebook, and even when we’re using it for Kingdom purposes, it’s important to be careful about how much time we spend there.

Because social media can only be a blessing when it’s used in the context of stewardship.

It’s been my experience that Facebook threatens to compromise stewardship of my time in two primary ways:

  • It’s easy to lose track of time. (Or maybe I’m the only one who has hopped on for a quick second, only to gasp with shock after 45 minutes have gone by?)
  • It’s easy to make it my “go-to.” I don’t think I would call it an addiction, but it can become tempting to check Facebook during every spare moment of the day – every time I’m waiting in line or feeding the baby or stirring the chili or stalling when I should be writing my next blog post. (Ahem.)

With these things in mind, I’ve come up with a list of productive tasks that have helped to replace Facebook as my “go-to” for every free moment.

2.Bake a treat for your neighbor.

3.Write in your journal.

4.Floss your teeth.

5.Pray.

6.Check the batteries of your smoke detector.

7.Read a few paragraphs of a Christian book.

21.Sit on your front porch with a cup of tea and your thoughts.

22.Organize one small area in your home.

23.Plan a date night.

30.Take a walk.

31.Read about and pray for today’s country at Operation World.

32.Arrange to take a meal to a sick friend, a foster family, or a family with a new baby. Plan the meal and create your shopping list.

33.Clean one shelf of your pantry or medicine cabinet, discarding out-of-date items.

34.Crank up the praise music and sing or dance in praise to the Lord.

35.Come up with your own list of ten quick and productive tasks you can do instead of Facebook.

Now we want to hear from you! What ideas can you add to this list?
